FDM

Fused Deposition Modeling

FDMFDM

What is

FDM

Fused depostion modeling or FDM prints parts by depositing thermoplastic material layer by layer via a nozzle. The print head moves in XY depositing a single layer after it is completed the Z axis, moves upwards and starts the deposition of the next layer.

When to use

FDM

FDM is an affordable option with a broad offer of materials and colors. It is ideal for large parts with lower print resolution with a suitable application in prototyping, cases, assemblies, models and tooling.

Advantages

  • Fast
  • Cost-effective
  • Short Lead Times
  • Broad Offer of Materials and Colors

Disadvantages

  • Surface Finish
  • Overhangs
  • Anisotropic Mechanical Properties
  • Support structures are necessary, but they may leave unwanted marks when removed

Infill options

Standard infill This infill option has an infill density of 20%, and its parts are filled with a single zig-zag pattern. It is the lightest and most affordable infill option available.

Medium infill With an infill density of 20-50%, this infill option utilizes a double cross-hatch pattern to provide increased rigidity and weight savings compared to solid infill.

Solid infill For higher strength requirements, this infill option has an infill density of 50-80% and is filled completely. It is the heaviest and most expensive infill option, but provides the highest level of strength for FDM 3D printed parts.
